Walking west along the tow-path walk-way toward the comercial district of Water Street in the village of Xing'an.
Continuing into the Water Street area.
Continuing west.
The three gates on the right side of the canal open into the Second Balancing Weir, which allows any additional excess water to flow from the canal down, back into the Xiang River and on north toward the Yangtze River. The two "balancing weirs" are designed to leave just the right amount of water flowing west in the canal to float barges on to the Li River some 30 kilometers distant and operate locks along the way.

This ornate "temple" bridge structure is the centerpiece of canal architecture along Water Street in Xing'an. It is also depicted in Stamp 2 on the main page of this website. This is the view back to the east; the three openings of the Second Balancing Weir are visible beyond the temple.
